Supreme Authority

Above All Powers - Advent 2024 - Day 12

"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven."  (Colossians 1:15-20 KJV)

When you've answered to judges, wardens, parole officers, and program directors, understanding authority is second nature. But here's the game-changer: There's an authority higher than your highest paperwork, stronger than your strongest addiction.

Christ isn't just another name on your contact list of authorities. He is the One who holds all things together—including your recovery, your reentry, and your restoration. The same power that keeps planets spinning is the power that sustains your journey toward healing and wholeness.

Your Authority Truth

Your ultimate accountability isn't to the Department of Corrections (DOC) or even your sponsor—it's to the One who reconciled all things through His cross. Colossians 1:16-17 reminds us that "by him were all things created... and he is before all things, and by him all things consist." This means that Christ's authority is not only supreme but also foundational to our existence and recovery. His authority comes with peace, not fear, as He is the head of the body, the church, and the source of our strength and hope.

Preparing Your Heart for Christmas

As we approach Christmas, take a moment to reflect on the following:

  • Which earthly authority makes you anxious today? Consider how this anxiety affects your daily life and your relationships.

  • Where do you need to experience Christ's peace? Identify areas where you feel unrest and invite His calming presence into those situations.

  • How can knowing His supreme authority change your perspective? Reflect on how this knowledge can empower you to face challenges with confidence and hope.

Engagement Prompts

  • Share how Christ's authority brings peace: What experiences have you had where His authority has calmed your fears or anxieties?

  • What's He holding together for you today? Think about the aspects of your life that feel chaotic and how Christ's presence can bring order.

  • Drop a comment if you need prayer for peace with authority: We are here to support one another in faith and community.

Understanding authority through the lens of Christ's supreme power can be a game-changer in your life. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, I encourage you to remember that His authority is not just a concept but a source of peace and strength in our journey toward recovery and restoration.
