Standing Trial

True Identity Under Fire Advent 2024 - Day 14

"And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?  But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed. And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.  Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?  Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.  And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands."  (Mark 14:60-65 KJV)

When life presents us with challenges such as charges, sentencing, or the impact of incarceration, it can deeply affect our identity and sense of self-worth. In these moments, it’s crucial to remember that our true identity is not defined by our circumstances but by our relationship with Christ.

The Power of Identity

T.D. Jakes reminds us, "What defines us is not the trials we face, but how we face our trials. When Jesus stood before His accusers, He stood in the power of who He knew He was, not who they said He was." This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of knowing who you are in Christ, especially when confronted with accusations or judgments from others.

Your Identity Truth

  • Your true identity is secure: Like Jesus, your identity is not determined by your accusers or your past. Your future is anchored in Christ, who sees you as whole and redeemed.
  • Stand firm in your new identity: In moments of doubt or pressure, remember that you are defined by God's promises and not by your past actions or the labels others may place on you.

Preparing Your Heart for Christmas

As we approach the Christmas season, a time of reflection and renewal, consider these questions:

  • Where do you need to stand firm in your new identity? Identify areas in your life where you feel insecure or doubtful about who you are in Christ.
  • What accusations from your past need silencing? Reflect on the negative voices that may still echo in your mind and take steps to counter them with truth.
  • How can you help others find their true identity? Think about ways you can support friends or family members who may be struggling with their identity or self-worth.

Rick Warren adds, "Your identity is not in your performance, your past, or people's opinions. It's in Christ's perfection, your future, and God's promises." This perspective is vital for anyone who has faced scrutiny or judgment, as it reinforces that our worth is rooted in God's love and grace, not in our past mistakes or the opinions of others.

Engagement Prompts

  • Share your "identity victory" moment: Reflect on a time when you overcame doubt about your identity and stood firm in who you are in Christ.
  • How do you stand firm under pressure? Consider the strategies you use to maintain your identity and faith during challenging times.
  • Drop a comment if you need identity prayer: We are here to support one another in prayer and encouragement as we navigate our journeys.

In the face of trials, it’s essential to remember that your identity is rooted in Christ. As you prepare your heart for Christmas, embrace the truth of who you are and help others do the same. Your journey toward healing and wholeness is not just about overcoming challenges; it’s about standing firm in your identity as a beloved child of God.
